The History of the Seahorse Knife, a Wine Corkscrew

Time:2022-02-21 Views:

The invention of the bottle opener originated from the invention of "bottle blowing" in England in the 17th century, that is, the invention of glass bottles. With glass bottles, people began to use corks to seal the mouths, but getting the corks out became a problem. The earliest historical records appear in the 1680s, and the corkscrew was called the "Steel Worm", which is what it looks like in the picture above.

About a hundred years later, in 1795, Reverend Samuel Henshall patented the world's first bottle opener, an invention that has been popular around the world for more than a hundred years, and was finally changed by the advent of the seahorse knife.

In 1882, German inventor Carl F.A. Wienke invented a tool called "Bartender's Assistant" (Butler's friend), which is now known as the seahorse knife.

Because the wine cap itself is very soft, many cutting knives are usually not sharpened. But even if it is not sharpened, the cutting knife is still sharp and dull, and some of the blades are difficult to remove the wine cap sharply. However, this is also very good to improve. If you find that the knife is dull, it can be significantly improved with a little polishing. The sharpener and sharpener used for kitchen knives can be used to sharpen wine knives.

The seahorse knife uses the lever principle to pull out the cork more effortlessly. According to the different lengths of the cork, the lever of different lengths can be pulled out more smoothly.

Most of the seahorse knives on the market can be divided into two factions, single-section and double-section. The double-section can pull out the cork in two strokes, while the single-section can be used once. In general, the double-section is easier to use, especially for novices; while the single-section requires a lot of experience, and it is relatively difficult to get started. The specific usage will be discussed later.
